AUCTION
The Pioneer Auction is our main

is over the top, food and non-alcoholic beverages are plentiful,
and it is an enjoyable time for all. Childcare is provided
in the school gym. Click here for
more info about the 2010 Auction.

FALL
CARNIVAL
The Fall Carnival is an evening family event that takes place
at the school in late October. Kids in costumes, games, cake
walks, a haunted houses, and treats are all part of the fun.
Coordinator: Sunny Hougan
FIELD
DAY
Field Day occurs on an afternoon in the last few days of school
and has encompassed gunny sack races, face painting, “fishing,”
whipped cream pie contests, and more. It is an afternoon of
fun and games for the kids in celebration of a long year of
academic work. Traditionally, students pair up and travel
from one game to another (both in the gym and out in the field),
finishing up with a water balloon toss and treat.
Coordinator: Carie Bussey and Eric Grimsted.
FIELD TRIP MONIES
A portion of PTA funds are traditionally set aside to assist
in the costs of class field trips. These monies offset expenses
and enable more trips to occur. They also allow a lower pass-along
cost to parents.
FUN RUN/BEACH PARTY
The Fun Run occurs on a late spring evening at Ingersoll Stadium.
Students can choose to run in races of different lengths,
with ribbons awarded to the top finishers. A Beach Party in
the Pioneer gym—with music, pizza, and refreshments—occurs
immediately following the fun run. Students do not have to
participate in the fun run to attend the beach party.
Coordinator: Carie Bussey (FR)/Rachel Shelly (BP)
THE
GARDEN
Pioneer has a garden in the back of the school, adjacent to
the Lower Pod, where students can dig, plant and harvest through
the fall. Volunteers lead projects during recess, and facilitate
kids connection to the Earth (translation: Kids like to dig!)
We've planted bulbs which bloom for two months, and we follow
this with seeding intriguing herbs and vegetables to harvest
in Fall. We also promote art and literature connections via
special projects with each class. Come see our fabulous bat
house! Coordinator: Erin McDonnell
GRANTS
A portion of the PTA budget is set aside each year for grants.
Grants may be requested by members in good standing and Pioneer
staff with the intent being that the monies will contribute
to the well-being of Pioneer students—as many as possible,
for as long as possible. For more information on requesting
a grant, please refer to the current Standing Rules.
INK
CARTRIDGES
Pioneer also will recycle your used ink cartridges for money
for Pioneer. Please consider putting an ink cartridge collection
box in an appropriate place in your office.
Cartridges can be dropped off in the school office.
Coordinator: Amy Riggs
JUNIOR PROGRAMS
The Pioneer PTA participates in Olympia Junior Programs, which
provides live theater to elementary students at minimal cost.
Students travel by bus to the Washington Center for Performing
Arts for two performances in the spring. www.olympiajuniorprograms.com.
Coordinators: Carrie Cortes-Monroy and Mariah Armenia
KIDS IN NEED
The PTA budget includes money that is set aside to meet the
needs of children who require it in order to help them be
successful at school and participate in PTA activities. These
needs are met confidentially and can occur through conversation
with the principal or an elected officer.
PASSPORT CLUB
The purpose of the Passport Club is to help students learn
some, or all of the world's countries over the course of a
school year, and to meet essential academic learning requirements
for geography. It also promotes strong parent involvement
in the school. An individualized, sequential, geography program,
participation is provided for all students by the Pioneer
PTA. View the Passport Club page
for more information, tips and helpful links.
Coordinator: Janeen Hales
SCIENCE FAIR
The Pioneer PTA sponsors an annual Science
Fair for our students (K–5) in order to encourage
the exploration of new things and have fun doing it. Coordinator:
Denise LaFlamme
STUDENTS ON STAGE
Students on Stage presents a theater production opportunity
in the spring for students in grades 3-5. It is an after-school
production.
Coordinator: Cassie Welliver
TALENT SHOW
The Talent Show is open to all grades and generally held on
an evening during the winter season.
Coordinators: Krista Jurkovich and Patti Francis
TEACHER START-UP FUNDS
The PTA provides start-up funds to teachers at the beginning
of each year to offset their own personal expenses incurred
in preparing the classroom for a new set of students. In 2009-10,
the amount was the equivalent of $125 for each full time teacher,
K-6.
WELCOME BACK SOCIAL
To celebrate the start of the new school year, the PTA Hospitality
Welcoming Committee invited all of our Pioneer community to
enjoy root"bear" floats and play at the Pioneer
playground. It was a "sweet" way to reconnect with
one another at summer's end!
